The Pueblo Zoo is home to more than 420 animals including 18 African Penguins, two African Lions and four North American River Otters. The zoo’s penguin exhibit opened in 1993. Since then, 50 penguin chicks have hatched at the zoo. The zoo participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums species survival plan programs. The African penguins, lions and otters are three species recommended for breeding by the programs, so they are very important not only to the visitor but the survival of their species.
